Pinion Ci-Line

Pinion Smart.Shift is an innovative electric shifting system for Pinion Ci-line gearboxes, which are based on the C-line. They are available with 12, 9, or 6 gears. The Smart.Shift Box controls the electric shifting in the Smart.Shift transmission. Here, the shift impulse from the e-trigger is passed on to the transmission.

The P-line offers 18, 12, or 9 gears. In all transmissions, the gear ratios are evenly spaced and tailored to the specific application. The flagship P1.18 has the smallest gear ratio at 11.5%. All gears are true gears; there is no gear overlap in Pinion transmissions. With a 636% gear range, Pinion offers the widest gear ratio range on the market!

Can I put a Pinion gearbox on my current bike?

Only if the frame was built for one. Pinion says a gearbox cannot be retrofitted to an existing bike, because the frame needs a special mount for the transmission. If you are building a new bike, we supply the gearbox, cranks, shifter and sprockets, and frame builders and bike brands can contact us to spec a Pinion build.

How often does a Pinion gearbox need service?

Pinion recommends changing the gearbox oil every 10,000 km (about 6,000 miles). The gears are sealed inside the housing, so there is no derailleur to adjust or cassette to wear out. Our DIY oil change kit fits both C-Line and P-Line gearboxes, and Pinion publishes service videos that walk through the steps.

What is the difference between C-Line and P-Line?

P-Line gearboxes are built for touring, bikepacking and trail riding: the P1.18 has 18 gears and a 636% range (2,700 g), and the P1.12 has 12 gears and a 600% range (2,350 g). C-Line gearboxes are lighter and aimed at everyday, e-bike, enduro and cargo use: the C1.12 (12 gears, 600%, about 2,100 g), the C1.9 (9 gears, 568%, about 2,000 g) and the C1.6 (6 gears, 295%, about 1,800 g).
